The people who invented the pourin...Hard to say.

The people who invented the pouring chalice -- and I've never seen one that was very old, so I'm guessing midcentury -- obviously thought that they had resolved the impasse. They had found a way to preserve the common cup and satisfy the germophobia in the pews.

And yes, the pouring chalice does preserve the dynamic that the faculty describes here, of a gift given to everybody and then shared with each person individually. So there's that.

On the other hand, it is just one more innovation, one more way to erode the powerful symbolism embedded in a practice that, for centuries, has worked very nicely without such innovations. That's another part of the faculty's objection, and one that would probably have pushed them to reject it. Those Ministerium guys weren't great at compromise.

I've used pouring chalices a few times, although I've never served a congregation that owned one. I don't hate them, but I certainly don't like them; they make the entire administration less graceful, not to say more spill-prone.Father Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18170260624474428623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15178007.post-40494742776756095032012-02-21T23:21:17.840-05:002012-02-21T23:21:17.840-05:00To what extent does this line of thinking apply to...To what extent does this line of thinking apply to using a chalice with a little "pouring lip" to pour wine into a "shot glass" picked up by the communicant as he or she files past?Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08488225098885466357noreply@blogger.com
