His own church is declining, a decline masked by immigration from catholic/dysfunctional societies with surplus populations.
But he's right about the fact of decline; religion isn't really something most 18-35 year-olds are that interested in doing. Because there are other ways of doing politics and socializing and education. Plus it's really boring. Truly tedious.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15178007.post-7760922865566275992012-07-17T04:14:06.175-04:002012-07-17T04:14:06.175-04:00Yeah, I thought about that as I was writing -- may...Yeah, I thought about that as I was writing -- maybe I should say "just a social movement" or "a social movement in any way that the secular world can understand."Father Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18170260624474428623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15178007.post-74685171216099415712012-07-17T02:55:13.265-04:002012-07-17T02:55:13.265-04:00An excellent response to the unfortunately commonp...An excellent response to the unfortunately commonplace and ignorant drivel Douthat offered in that op-ed.

But I would disagree on one point. It is true that if you are looking for a quick and consistent answer to various social issues of our day, Christianity (or, rather, its historic form) isn't likely to give you a simple and unequivocal answer. But I think it is actually incorrect to say that it isn't a social movement.

I find it very difficult to read the Gospels and Paul (much less the Prophets and Torah) and not see The call for followers of Christ to be a community of a certain kind: a community where justice is a primary concern. The Bible veritably drips with this concern, and it's pretty much impossible to be about justice in any setting apart from community and things social.Mark C.
